New Year New Studio

NEW YEAR NEW STUDIO

ISSUE NO.1

What’s up, Strong Humans. I’m Danielle, your certified Claystylist. Welcome to my corner of clay, Black hair, and building an artist’s life.

Behind the Roots

I’m starting the year with a big studio update. I’ve officially left my studio of the past three years and I’m building a home pottery studio in my garage. This is something I’ve prayed about for a long time, and it still feels a little surreal that the moment is finally here.

If you’re a perfectionist, you already know that moving can be a nightmare. A few weeks in, I already want the space to be done, but I’m also learning to appreciate watching it unfold slowly into what I’ve imagined.

I’ve decided to document this season and take you along for the ride, partly for accountability and partly because I want your input. I’ll be asking for advice along the way, so if you want to follow the journey, my new YouTube series StudioMoves is live now!

New Growth

New Growth is a peek at what I’m excited to explore in the studio this week.

1.FIRING MY KILN FOR THE FIRST TIME ~ I’ve had my kiln for over a month and haven’t fired it yet, but this is the week. A test fire first, then I can finally start putting work inside. Honestly, pinch me.

2.TESTING NEW GLAZES (HAIR COLORS) ~ I’ve been wanting to expand the hair colors I offer for my Bantu Baddies for a while now, and I’m excited to add red and copper to the mix. Now for the fun part: testing. I can’t wait to see how these new colors show up on the final pieces.

3.BRAINSTORMING NEW WORK ~ I have an exhibition coming up, which means it’s time to make some new work. It’ll be a nice break from the pre-orders I’ve been working on. I have something sickening in mind for these pieces, so stay tuned if you want to follow the journey.
